It comes from the inside of mollusk shells. This particular piece is an antique gaming counter, poker chip, or trading coin. They were produced during the Regency Era in Great Britain from 1795 to 1837. The pattern is hand etched and it is set in Sterling Silver and finished with three 18 Karat Gold beads on the "frame". On the back there is a "window" with two love birds etched on the piece. It hangs on an 18 inch sterling
